KEY POINTS EMERGING FROM THE SURVEYS
·The majority of employers surveyed (70%) said that only CSCS registered staff should be employed on construction sites·
·A small majority (54%) actually require their staff to be CSCS registered. Those employers working in the London area were the least likely to demand CSCS registration.
·On balance employers felt that the Government target of having only CSCS registered staff on its sites by the end of 2004 was achievable.
·Firms who were most aware of CSCS had the most positive attitude towards the scheme.
·On balance employers rated CSCS higher than other construction related registration schemes.
·CITB appears to have a crucial role in dispelling any "fear factor" among employers over the introduction of CSCS.
·Around 50% of the workforce surveyed was not aware of CSCS and just 11% were registered with the scheme. The highest levels of registration were among electricians, carpenters and plumbers.
·Employers are by far the most significant source for providing information on CSCS to the workforce.
·Fewer than half of those aware of CSCS had been offered information about the scheme.
·The application process did not appear to be a hurdle to registration.
·Among those surveyed the rating of the benefits consequent on CSCS registration were considered to be minimal.
·Where there is a history of registration, notably among electricians and plumbers, the awareness of and rating of benefits was significantly higher and more had CSCS registration.
·More than 60% of workers sampled were either positive or neutral towards CSCS.
·The overwhelming majority who were registered said they would re-register.
·Very few, just 16 out of more than 4,000 had been offered fake CSCS cards.
